Music is one way we identify ourselves and, of course, like everything else, it is threatened by the machinations of the powerful and relentless music industry. Man is a creator and music celebrates this creativity, be it a primitive beat or a complex classical outing. There is room for all music at Planet Distribution: however our real love is for the many varied roots of the musical tree. This is the music that has stood the test of time and usually a long way from Tin Pan Alley.
Music comes in all shapes and sizes. There is something very special about an old ballad sung by a traditional singer. Although untrained in the classical sense these singers carry with them the stories of the past. They also carry tunes down through the years. At Planet we have a wide cross-section of traditional song, be it the chant of the rain forest pygmies, the sound of a Pakistani sufi or the songs of Chinese opera. We bring the whole world to you. In selecting our recordings we have attempted to represent labels with musical integrity with the best possible performers and supportive notes. We also battle to maintain realistic prices in a world of economic madness. Planet Distribution, although a new company, has an impressive history that started in 1973 when Warren Fahey established Folkways Music and then Larrikin Records. After selling both businesses, Warren had planned to spend the bulk of his time doing folklore research and writing but, somehow or other, he was persuaded to launch Shanachie Entertainment in Australia in 2000. A modest venture to represent some of his favourite labels resulted in more like-minded labels knocking on his door until, in 2002, he decided to establish Planet Distribution. It is still a modest operation however it represents some of the world's most impressive specialist music producers. The aim of Planet Distribution is to make available complete catalogues to the retail and consumer market in Australia and New Zealand. Excellent warehouse stocks are maintained and if we haven't got a title we will soon! |
